Hello! My name is Becca Blau and I am the English teacher for the Violet Room. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and currently live in the UES. This will be my 9th year teaching early childhood. I’m thrilled to be at Arc En Ciel and to be part of a bilingual learning community! I was a kindergarten special education teacher in Manhattan for the past 3 years. Prior to that, I was a preschool teacher in Brooklyn for 5 years. I am very grateful that my job is my life’s purpose. Teaching little ones is a core part of my identity (and also runs in my family – my mom and sister are preschool teachers too). I’m engaging, dedicated, nurturing, and reflective about my practices. I’m a lifelong learner and I seek out opportunities to grow as an educator and person. I love to use creative strategies to find what works for each child and to help them feel successful and part of the classroom community.
I received my master’s degree in Early Childhood Development and Learning: Diverse Children and Families from Hunter College. I got my bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education from Brooklyn College. I hold dual NYS teaching certifications in Early Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities, Birth-Grade 2. My priority as a teacher is to create an environment where students are engaged and excited to learn. I am so excited to get to know each of your children and incorporate their interests and ideas into the classroom.
I embed art, music, theatre, play, language, books, science, and/or movement into all my lessons and activities. For young children, play is their “work” and teaches the skills they need for ongoing success in school and life! My job is to help them learn to problem-solve, advocate for themselves, play with and be kind to others, explore materials in new ways, gain independence, and communicate effectively. Watching my students acquire these skills brings me great joy. Partnering with families is important to me – you are the experts of your children, and I welcome your input. Looking forward to a wonderful and fun year!
